Solar Panel Installation Totnes
This is our home patch. We're based in South Hams and most of our early installs were in and around Totnes, Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, and Salcombe. We know these properties: the listed cottages on Fore Street, the hilltop farmhouses, the new-builds around the edges. Totnes was into sustainability before it was fashionable, and solar just makes sense here.
Solar in South Hams: Our Local Knowledge
We're based here. We know the lanes, the roofs, the planning quirks, and we've already installed on dozens of properties across the area.
South Hams gets excellent sun. The rolling hills mean lots of south-facing aspects, and if you're up on the ridge above Totnes or out towards Stoke Gabriel, you often get minimal shading from neighbouring properties.
Totnes was doing transition towns and community energy before the rest of the country caught on. It's a community that understands renewable energy and solar just makes sense here.
South Hams is full of Grade II listed properties and AONB designations. We've had installs approved on listed buildings by working with conservation officers early: all-black panels, hidden cables, sympathetic mounting. It's doable, it just needs care.
Out towards Harberton, Halwell, or the lanes around Kingsbridge, the grid is more fragile. Battery backup makes a real difference when you lose power for hours at a time in winter. Some of our rural customers are near energy-independent.
Houses are expensive here. Solar with a good warranty is a genuine selling point, and buyers expect it. It improves your EPC rating which matters more every year.
We're not driving down from Bristol. We're based in South Hams, which means surveys, installs, and aftercare happen without waiting weeks. If something needs attention, we can usually be there same day.

What Devon Customers Say
Join hundreds of satisfied customers across the South West who've transformed their energy independence
“We recently had a solar panel system, EV charger and battery fitted by Yarmer renewables. Matt, Char and team were amazing and installed the system quickly and with great care (despite the horrendous weather). The quality of the installation has really impressed us, while the advice and information throughout the process has been excellent. We're loving our new system!”
“From multiple quotes and pitches from solar providers, Matt at Yarmer Renewables delivered something refreshingly rare: a system built from product knowledge and from listening to what we wanted. The installation went incredibly smoothly and was professionalism from start to finish. It was a pleasure to have them on site.”
“I've just completed the 'who do I get to fit the solar?' puzzle with the maze of choices and deals out there. Matt from Yarmer Renewables was an accidental contact but it has been a happy accident! Although I initially had some reservations about using a smaller installer I would now unreservedly recommend them. Everything has been well designed and is bespoke to this house.”
Totnes Solar Installation FAQs
A 4kW system (10 panels) runs £5,000-£6,500. Bigger rural properties often suit 5-8kW systems at £7,000-£9,500. Add a battery and it's another £2,500-£6,000 depending on capacity. We quote free and we don't pressure you.
Yes, most of South Hams is AONB and we install here all the time. The key is all-black panels, low-profile mounting, and (for listed buildings) working with the conservation officer early. We've yet to have an install refused when we've done the prep properly.
Welcome to South Hams. We deal with single-track lanes, tight parking, and scaffolding in awkward spots regularly. We plan access carefully at survey stage. We know which lanes the scaffolding truck can actually get down.
Depends on the shade. Deciduous trees are less of a problem (they lose leaves in winter when generation is already low). We use optimisers or microinverters on partially-shaded roofs so one shaded panel doesn't drag the whole array down. We'll be honest at survey if shading is too severe.
Yes, we've done several. It requires listed building consent (we can help with the application). The approach is different: hidden cable routes, reversible fixings where possible, panels chosen to match the roof character. It takes more planning but it's absolutely doable.
We're based in South Hams, so most Totnes-area properties are 15-20 minutes away. Surveys usually within a week, installation within 2-3 weeks of going ahead. If something goes wrong after install, we can be with you same day.
